Track and Field

post by Jerry Stafford

A Centurion tank floundered on the lawn of the Giardini, its undercarriage exposed beneath the blue Venetian sky. The whole machine abruptly starts up into motion, filling the air with a deafening reverberation which echoes around the park. Propelled by a runner on a treadmill harnessed to the tracks it is deafening, violent, shocking even in its impotence. The work is called Track and Field.

This is the eye-opener to the US pavilion by the Cuban-American duo Allora & Calzadilla at the 54th biennale  and the loudest and punchiest affront in the place. The Centurion is a British creation, but let that pass, perhaps as further evidence of the special relationship. For this is an art tank, with a strong conceit and a cunning pun of a title, yoking imperialism, mechanization, personal/political goals and much more, with the overall notion of pounding the world.

Inside the pavilion The captains of the US Olympic gymnastic teams also performed pommel and floor routines on and around beautiful wood carved representations of American Airlines first class seats and a functioning ATM service till hooked up to a giant church organ  played a tune composed and customized to your pin number as you withdrew money! Well worth a 50 euro withdrawal !

Commercial Break
post by Jerry Stafford

DASHA ZHUKOVA, ALEXANDER DELLAL, and NEVILLE WAKEFIELD hosted one of the most popular parties last week at the BAUER hotel in Venice to celebrate Commercial Break, the mobile installation produced by GARAGE PROJECTS with an accompanying iPad application by POST magazine. “We wanted to be the first to do a major video art project online,” said Dellal. “Seeing as how Venice is a city that usually only advertises itself, we thought it was perfect to ask artists to do work on the language of publicity in its changing landscape.” The floating pavilion, set up on a barge, shows unique films or “commercials” from a laundry list of 134 cutting-edge contemporary artists, from China’s darling PREMIERE HEURE director Yi Zhou—also with her own pavilion in Venice this year—to Richard Phillips, who debuted his first foray into film with Lindsay Lohan.

Michael Clark

post by Jerry Stafford

LAST WEEK we celebrated the Michael Clark Company’s - gala opening at London’s TATE MODERN. This waq the world premiere of Michael’s brand new commission for the Turbine Hall. The night was also be a fundraising event for Michael Clark Company - to include an exclusive pre-performance dinner hosted by Kate Moss and Bobby Gillespie, the full performance and a champagne reception after-party with a live performance by Jarvis and his mate as Relaxed Muscle.

Michael Clark was born in Aberdeen  and began traditional Scottish dancing at the age of four. In 1975 he left home to study at the Royal Ballet School in London, and on his final day at the school he was presented with the Ursula Moreton Choreographic Award. In 1979 Clark joined Ballet Rambert , working primarily with Richard Alston , who created roles for him in Bell High (1979), Landscape (1980), Rainbow Ripples (1981) and, subsequently, two solos: Soda Lake (1981) and Dutiful Ducks (1982). Later, attending a summer school with Merce Cunningham and John Cage  led him to work with Karole Armitage, through whom he met film maker Charles Atlas.

See this great piece of classic Micheal Clarke company footage directed by Atlas. Costumes by Leigh Bowerey and music by THE FALL!

The first concert of his own choreography was in 1982 at London’s Riverside Studio,  where he became resident choreographer. By 1984 Clark had made 16 original pieces for himself, his friends, and various small-scale companies.
